Lilly Diabetes Racing Program

ABOUT drive down a1c

Managing diabetes isn’t always easy. It’s an around-the-clock commitment. That’s why Lilly Diabetes and Ryan Reed want fans to know about the importance of controlling their A1C.

A1C is a measure of blood sugar levels and the primary test for diabetes management. A doctor will use a person’s A1C number to help determine how well they are managing their diabetes.

Fans can take action to better care for their diabetes by:

  • Eating a balanced diet
  • Exercising
  • Talking with their doctor about creating a treatment plan that works for them and taking treatment as prescribed

ABOUT THE LILLY DIABETES RACING PROGRAM

Diabetes affects nearly 30 million people nationwide. As the Official Diabetes Health Partner of NASCAR®, Lilly Diabetes engages the NASCAR® community through educational initiatives that raise awareness of the importance of diabetes care and overall health.

“I’ve heard from a lot of my fans who have type 2 diabetes and although I have type 1 diabetes, we agree that it can be hard to manage this disease, especially with a busy schedule. It’s easy for life to get in the way of our best efforts, but it’s important to stay committed to our treatment plans. I’m excited to share my story and encourage fans impacted by diabetes.” – Ryan Reed

Together, Lilly, NASCAR and Ryan Reed seek to inspire fans impacted by diabetes to better manage the disease and remind them to stay confident and persevere, even when it gets hard.

ABOUT RYAN REED

Ryan Reed grew up in Bakersfield, California, watching his dad race and fell in love with the sport. His own racing career started early, when Ryan captured the Kid’s Kart Track Championship at age four. In February 2011, just as his career was reaching new heights, Ryan received life-changing news. He was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes and told he would never race again. Instead of giving up, Ryan found a doctor who assured him that with hard work and disciplined diabetes management, he could still race.

Ryan continues to work closely with his doctor on a treatment plan that works for him and includes eating healthy, exercising and taking treatment as prescribed.

Racing full time in the NASCAR® Xfinity Series since 2014, Ryan drives the No. 16 Drive Down A1C Lilly Diabetes Ford Mustang. Recording two career wins thus far, Ryan won the 2015 and 2017 season openers at Daytona International Speedway. He continues to be an inspiration among the millions of people impacted by diabetes, proving that through hard work and perseverance, you can achieve your dreams.
