About Lilly Diabetes

Lilly has been a global leader in diabetes care since 1923, when we introduced the world’s first commercial insulin. Today, we continue to build upon that heritage by working to meet the diverse needs of people with diabetes and those who care for them. Through research and collaboration, a broad and growing product portfolio, and a continued determination to provide real solutions—from medicines to support programs and more—we strive to make life better for all those affected by diabetes around the world.

Continued Discovery and Innovation

Since that first watershed moment in 1923, we have pushed ourselves to continue finding new and better ways to support the diabetes community—both through the medicines we discover and the programs we support. This is what drove us to other milestone achievements in diabetes history, such as the use of recombinant DNA technology to create the first human insulin in 1982 and the first rapid-acting insulin analog in 1996. See what's up and coming in our diabetes clinical development pipeline.

At Lilly, we work hard every day to bring new medicines and programs to the people who need them, but we understand that diabetes is bigger than just one company. That’s why we work with companies and organizations around the world to reach new communities and collaborate on innovation and discovery.

Through the International Diabetes Federation, Life for a Child program, and our own Lilly NCD (non-communicable disease) Partnership, we’ve brought access to our medicines and resources to communities in some of the world’s poorest countries. We also work with companies such as Boehringer Ingelheim and organizations like the European Association for the Study of Diabetes to develop and commercialize new diabetes therapies to better support diabetes patients throughout their diabetes journey.
